On August 28, Apple will broadcast its first live sporting event on Apple Immersive – in 8K and with a 180-degree field of view. Germany is one of nine countries where the service is available. The catch is the time.

Sports are now a regular feature on Apple TV; since the beginning of August , all League Cup matches have also been available there at no extra cost. However, what Apple is now announcing is less of a programming premiere and more of a technological one.

Apple, in partnership with Major League Baseball, has released the September schedule for "Friday Night Baseball", including the first-ever live broadcast on Apple Immersive. The premiere takes place on August 28th with the game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Apple will broadcast "Friday Night Baseball" live for the first time on Apple Immersive on the Vision Pro starting August 28.
  • The footage is recorded in 3D with 8K resolution and a 180-degree field of view.
  • Germany is one of the nine countries where immersive streaming is available – Austria and Switzerland are not.
  • Four of the seven September games are planned for Apple Immersive.
  • All matches in this country start between 00:30 and 04:00 at night.

What is technically new about the transmission

Apple Immersive is the video format that has accompanied the Vision Pro since its launch: three-dimensional, recorded in 8K, and with a 180-degree field of view that places the viewer inside the scene rather than in front of it. Until now, the format was only available as a pre-recorded presentation. Live streaming is a new feature.

The game utilizes dedicated camera positions, a separate commentary team, dedicated replays, and a graphics package that allows users to freely position lineups and statistics within their virtual space. During breaks in the game, the broadcast remains live: Ambisonics microphones capture the stadium acoustics, which are then output as spatial audio.

A Vision Pro with an M5 or M2 chip and an active Apple TV subscription are required. Full replays and a compilation of the most important scenes will then be available on demand.

Germany is participating, Austria and Switzerland are not

Immersive streaming isn't available everywhere Apple TV is sold. Apple lists nine countries and regions: Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the USA.

This makes Germany one of only two European countries on the list. Austria and Switzerland are missing – unlike most of the restrictions we usually report on, this is not due to EU regulations, but simply to the availability of the Vision Pro in the respective markets.

The regular „Friday Night Baseball“ without the immersive format remains unaffected and is still available in 60 countries and regions without regional restrictions.

The schedule – and when it will be shown in this country

Seven matches are scheduled before September 18th, four of them in Apple Immersive. For German-speaking players, the time is particularly relevant: there is currently a six-hour gap between the US East Coast and Central Europe, meaning all matches start after midnight here.

September 12San Diego Padres - San Francisco Giants4:00 AMYes
September 19thPhiladelphia Phillies - New York Mets1:00 AMno

The dates are adjusted for Central European Summer Time and fall on the Saturday or Sunday following the announced Friday. Because neither Germany nor the USA switches to winter time before the end of October, the six-hour interval applies to all the games mentioned.

How much the subscription costs in this country

Apple's announcement states a US price of $12.99 per month. In the German store, Apple TV costs €9.99 per month, after a free trial month for new customers. Anyone activating a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac receives the service free for three months.

A test run with a manageable audience

The real news isn't the schedule, but that Apple is using the immersive format live for the first time. Pre-recorded content can be revised as often as needed; a live 8K 3D broadcast has to be perfect on the first try – including camera work, direction, and transmission stability.

Apple's choice of baseball for this makes sense: the game has fixed camera positions, clearly defined actions, and long pauses in between. For a format that situates the viewer in space, this is significantly more manageable than a sport with constant camera movements.

In practical terms, this means that if you want to watch the premiere live on your Vision Pro, you'll have to be awake in the middle of the night – four of the Immersive matches start at 1:00 or 4:00 AM. If you opt for the replay the next day instead, you'll miss out on the whole point of this premiere: being broadcast live.

Apple has not yet revealed what will happen with the format. So far, the four September games have been announced – whether immersive broadcasts will become a permanent feature after that likely depends on the outcome of this test run. (Image: Apfelpatient)
