A new version of the Apple Support app was released in July. At the same time, Apple updated its terms of service on the official website—a typical step before launching new features. The term "Support Assistant" appears for the first time. The descriptions indicate that this is a chat tool that uses generative AI to automatically handle support requests. The feature isn't active yet, but it's expected to be released soon.
What the Apple Support Assistant should do
The new Support Assistant is based on generative AI models. This means that answers are not retrieved from a database, but are generated dynamically – similar to ChatGPT. The feature is designed to help answer technical questions, for example, problems with the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other Apple devices, as well as with services like iCloud or Apple Music. Unlike the existing chat with human Apple employees, the Support Assistant is a bot. The interaction is automated, and the system directly provides suggestions or instructions based on the question posed.
Notes in the terms of use
In the revised terms of service (discovered by MacRumors) on July 15, Apple states that the Support Assistant uses "generative models." These systems may occasionally produce false, incomplete, misleading, offensive, or even harmful content. Apple points out that users must accept these limitations in order to use the assistant. The AI is intended to be used exclusively for technical support and not for general conversations or personal concerns.
No official launch yet
The feature hasn't been officially released yet. While the Support app was last updated on the same day as the Terms of Service—July 15—the assistant hasn't been found yet. However, there are previous examples where Apple has prepared new features in the background before rolling them out publicly. It's likely that the rollout will begin soon. Currently, the new Terms of Service are only available on Apple's US website. This suggests that the feature will initially be available exclusively in the US. There are currently no indications of a rollout in other countries.
