Apple has released two firmware updates for the AirTags since November. However, the company did not reveal what has changed with these updates. But now details have finally been announced.
In a support article on the Apple website, the company describes the new features in AirTag firmware updates 2.0.24 and 2.0.36. Version 2.0.24 of the AirTag firmware, released on November 10, finally allows iPhone users to locate an unknown AirTag using Precision Find. This feature was announced by Apple earlier this year as part of the company's measures to prevent people from using AirTag for stalking purposes. If the iPhone detects an unknown AirTag moving with the user, the person can use Precision Find in combination with an audible signal to quickly find and deactivate the AirTag. Apple has also improved the notification when an AirTag that has been separated from its owner is traveling with you.
AirTags firmware update – not particularly intuitive
Of course, some of these features require an iPhone 11 or newer, as they rely on the U1 chip with ultra-wideband technology. With the AirTag firmware update 2.0.36, released on December 12, Apple fixed an issue where the accelerometer built into the AirTag wouldn't activate in certain situations. This sensor is likely designed to let the iPhone detect when an AirTag is moving. Unfortunately, there's no intuitive way to update an AirTag. Apple says the tracker will update automatically when it's within range of the iPhone. Also, AirTag firmware updates are rolling out gradually, so not everyone will get them at the same time.
