Apple has released a new firmware update for the AirPods Max (USB-C) that was supposed to bring a major improvement: lossless audio over USB-C. However, users are currently facing a problem. Due to a bug in iOS 18.4, the new firmware cannot be installed.
Apple had already announced that AirPods Max with USB-C connectors would soon support lossless audio. This requires a firmware update, which was made available after the release of iOS 18.4. The build number is 7E99 and is available on Apple's servers. However, it hasn't made it to the devices. The reason for this is a bug in iOS 18.4 that blocks automatic installation. The Lightning version of the AirPods Max is not affected—but it isn't scheduled for this update either.
Lossless audio only for USB-C version
The new firmware update is intended exclusively for AirPods Max with a USB-C connector. This version was introduced in 2024. Users of the older Lightning version cannot use the update and will not receive the new audio features in the future. The new firmware brings two key improvements:
- Support for lossless audio over USB-C
- Wired audio playback with Apple's new USB-C to 3.5 mm cable
Until now, wired playback was only possible with the Lightning version of the AirPods Max. With the update, the USB-C version will follow suit—at least in theory.
iOS 18.4 blocks firmware installation
Although Apple says the new firmware is available on its servers, it isn't automatically downloaded to the AirPods Max. Developer Aaron Peris has made the issue public. The cause is a bug in iOS 18.4 that prevents the update from being rolled out. On Apple's support page, the firmware is now listed as "coming soon"—another sign that Apple is aware of the issue but hasn't yet released a fix (via Apple ).
How to check the current firmware version
If you want to know which firmware version your AirPods Max is running, you can check it in the iOS settings. Open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods at the top, and scroll down. The firmware version will be displayed there. Important: Your AirPods must be connected to your iPhone or iPad for this menu to be visible.
How to prepare for the update
Even if the installation isn't working right now, you can prepare for the upcoming update. The firmware update on AirPods Max runs automatically in the background, so you can't initiate it manually. For it to work, the following requirements must be met:
- You must have iOS 18.4 or macOS 15.4 installed
- The AirPods Max must be connected to your device via Bluetooth
- Your iPhone, iPad or Mac must be connected to a Wi-Fi network
- Charge the AirPods Max using the power cable
- Place it in the case and leave it near your device for at least 30 minutes
- After that, you can check again if the firmware has been updated
The update will be automatically downloaded as soon as Apple fixes the bug in iOS 18.4. There is no specific date for the fix yet.
AirPods Max: USB-C users will soon benefit
The firmware update for the AirPods Max brings real improvements – but only for users of the USB-C version. Lossless audio and wired playback with the new adapter are useful new features. The iOS bug that prevents installation is annoying, but should be fixed soon with another iOS update. Until then, you can prepare your setup and make sure all the requirements for the update are met.
