Apple released watchOS 6 for the Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 4 on September 19th released. But when will Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 users receive the new operating system?

The new watchOS operating system includes some innovations that allow the Apple Watch to be more independent from the iPhone. However, not all of these functions will be available on the Series 1 and 2. The two older generations will have to do without the new watch faces. However, they will receive the new applications from Apple, including the calculator, voice memos and audiobooks app. With watchOS 6, the Apple Watch also received its own App Store. It is possible to download and manage applications without an iPhone - we will show you how to do this here.

When will watchOS 6 be released for Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2?

But now let's get to the actual question. According to Apple, the two older Apple Watch generations will be included sometime in the fall. No specific date was given - but there is a hint. The current watchOS 6.1 beta is not only available for the Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4 and Series 5 but also for the first two generations. But what does that tell us? Well, when watchOS 6 was tested in the summer, the beta versions were only available for the newer Watch models. This has changed with the watchOS 6.1 beta.

The final version should therefore be available for all Apple Watch models. Since the operating system is currently in its fifth preview, the final version should be released soon. As a reminder: watchOS 5.1 went through a total of five beta phases before it was finally released in October 2018. The new update may appear together with iOS 13.2, as the latter is expected on Monday or Tuesday - more on that here. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphot)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
