iPhone 18 Pro: First rumors about design and technology

The iPhone 18 Pro is still almost a year away, but numerous rumors about new features and design changes are already circulating. The information comes primarily from well-known leakers Instant Digital and Digital Chat Station, both active on the Chinese platform Weibo. Both have been correct with some predictions in the past, although not all of the rumors have been true.

Smaller Dynamic Island

According to Instant Digital, the iPhone 18 Pro—like the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro Max—will feature a slightly smaller dynamic island. This would further refine Apple's display and continue its move toward a true all-screen design. However, there won't be an under-screen Face ID yet. This feature is reportedly only expected to appear with the iPhone 19 Pro models or later.

The rumor about the smaller Dynamic Island was already circulating before the iPhone 17 Pro, but hasn't come true yet. Now it seems to be relevant again—and it would fit well with Apple's long-term plans. The development could be an intermediate step on the way to an iPhone with an all-glass design, which is rumored to be released for the 20th anniversary.

“Transparent” MagSafe area

According to Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 18 Pro will be largely similar in design to the iPhone 17 Pro. This also applies to the rear camera system, which will continue to feature three lenses in a triangular arrangement. The display sizes are expected to remain unchanged: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

An interesting detail concerns the Ceramic Shield area on the back. This is said to have a "slightly transparent design." What exactly this means is still unclear. Presumably, the MagSafe area will appear somewhat more translucent or matte than before. Whether this is merely a visual change or also a functional difference remains to be seen.

Variable aperture on the main camera

The rumors about the camera are particularly exciting. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the iPhone 18 Pro's main camera will feature a variable aperture. This should allow for manual control of the amount of light reaching the sensor. This would be a significant difference from previous Pro models, which have used a fixed aperture of f/1.78 since the iPhone 14 Pro.

With a variable aperture, the depth of field—that is, how much the background blurs compared to the foreground—could be adjusted more precisely. In practice, this would offer more control over image composition. However, since smartphone sensors are smaller than those of traditional cameras, it remains to be seen how significant the actual difference will be. One thing is certain: none of the previous iPhone Pro cameras offer this feature, which would make the iPhone 18 Pro an exciting upgrade.

New A20 processor with 2-nanometer technology

According to reports, the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a completely new A20 Pro chip. This chip is manufactured by TSMC using a 2-nanometer process, which should provide significantly improved energy efficiency and higher performance. This could allow Apple to significantly increase performance again, especially in demanding applications such as artificial intelligence, gaming, or multitasking.

Another rumor concerns the new C2 modem, which Apple is said to have developed itself.
