Rumors say that Apple will introduce a successor to the iPhone SE next year. The next generation model is expected to have 5G features and more performance but will not offer any major innovations.
Display analyst Ross Young has Tweet Details about a third-generation iPhone SE have been released. The upcoming device will reportedly feature 5G connectivity and a 4.7-inch LCD screen borrowed from the iPhone 8. Apple incorporated several iPhone 8 components into the 2020 iPhone SE, including a chassis with rounded edges, a Touch ID home button, and a single rear camera. While the new SE model doesn't have a larger display, Ross says Apple plans to call the smartphone the "iPhone SE Plus."
With A15 Bionic Chip & X60 Modem from Qualcomm
Aside from 5G and expected internal improvements, such as a modern A-series processor, it's unclear which features deserve the "Plus" designation. Rumors of an upcoming SE refresh have been sporadic. But recent rumors align with Ross's report. In July, Nikkei Asia, citing sources, claimed that a new version of Apple's "low-cost iPhone" would pack an A15 Bionic system-on-chip and Qualcomm's X60 modem into an iPhone 8-inspired chassis. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made a similar comment in a June report, noting that the device will be the "cheapest iPhone model ever."
What's next for the iPhone SE?
As for the market launch, it's conceivable that Apple will unveil the device in spring 2022. Following the "iPhone SE Plus" next year, Apple will reportedly launch an "iPhone SE 3" with a 5.5- to 6.1-inch LCD in 2024. Interestingly, this device fits the description of an SE variant that Kuo predicted back in 2019. At that time, Kuo predicted an "iPhone SE 2 Plus" that could launch in 2021 with a 5.5- or 6.1-inch display and an all-screen design, which, as we know, didn't happen.
