After the launch of the iPhone 16e, attention is now turning to the next generation of Apple's premium smartphone: the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A new leak from well-known Apple leaker Sonny Dickson gives a first indication of what the device might look like. The camera design in particular is expected to change significantly. Here is all the information known so far about Apple's upcoming top model.

With each new iPhone generation, Apple is focusing on innovations that improve the smartphone experience. The Pro models in particular offer exclusive features and higher-quality materials. The iPhone 17 Pro Max could receive one of the biggest design changes in recent years. A new camera arrangement and other technical improvements are on the table. A completely new model, the iPhone 17 Air, is also regularly mentioned in the rumors.

New design with revised camera

The most striking detail of the leak regards the camera system of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Instead of the classic triple camera in the upper left corner, the new model is said to have a wider camera arrangement. This separates the three lenses from other elements such as the flash, microphone and LiDAR sensor. This new design is called the Camera Bar and is not only intended to change the optics, but also offer functional advantages. Rumors suggest that the new design allows better lens positioning for optimized lighting conditions. It could also have an impact on image stabilization and AR features. Apple is increasingly relying on augmented reality, so a changed arrangement of the sensors could indicate that AR functions will be further expanded.

Which models will receive the new design?

Not all next-generation iPhone models will get the new camera bar design. According to the latest leaks, it will only be used on the Pro models and the iPhone 17 Air. Specifically, this affects the following devices:

  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17 Air

The regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, on the other hand, are expected to retain the classic camera layout. This would allow Apple to make a clearer distinction between standard and Pro models.

Technical specifications – What is known so far

In addition to the design changes, there are initial indications of the technical features of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple could once again deliver a powerful hardware upgrade:

  • Processor: A new A19 Pro chip optimized for higher performance and energy efficiency
  • Display: Still a 120 Hz ProMotion OLED display with improved brightness
  • Case material: Titanium case, possibly in an even lighter version
  • Battery: Optimizations that enable a longer runtime
  • Camera: Advances in AI-supported image processing for even better photos and videos

The new chip and the improved camera AI in particular could bring about significant improvements. Apple is increasingly working with artificial intelligence to further optimize photo and video recordings.

iPhone 17 Pro Max: What really changes in the design

The iPhone 17 Pro Max could receive one of the biggest design overhauls in recent years. With the camera bar design and powerful new hardware, it will be one of the most exciting Apple products for 2025. Most of the information is still leaks and rumors, but the revelations so far indicate that Apple is further developing its premium smartphone and revamping it both visually and technically. Until the official presentation, it will remain exciting to see which of these innovations will actually be implemented. (Image: @SonnyDickson / X)
