Apple plans to redesign the Mac mini later this year, and it's introducing a significant change: the USB-A ports are being removed. The Mac mini is known for its compact size and power, and this change signals an evolution that could be important to many users. Find out what this means for you, and how it could affect your use of the Mac mini, in this article.

If you use the Mac mini or are thinking about getting one, you will certainly rely on the various ports to connect your devices. The loss of USB-A ports could therefore be a change for some. But Apple is focusing on future-proof technologies with the new design and hardware. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg wrote about these upcoming changes to the Mac mini in his "Power On" newsletter. reported. Let's take a look at what exactly awaits you.

The switch to USB-C

The new Mac mini will no longer have USB-A ports. Instead, Apple is relying entirely on USB-C. This means that you can only use your existing USB-A devices with an adapter. However, USB-C also has advantages: It enables faster data transfers and can handle multiple functions via a single port, such as charging accessories and data transfer.

New design

In addition to the technical adjustments, the design of the Mac mini is also changing. It is supposed to be smaller, about the size of an Apple TV, but slightly taller than the current model. Despite the more compact design, the aluminum casing is retained, which speaks for the longevity of the device.

M4 chip: More performance

The new Mac mini will be equipped with the M4 chip, which makes it even more powerful. This chip will be used in all future Apple Macs and promises not only better performance but also greater energy efficiency. If you rely on performance, you will benefit from this innovation.

What stays, what goes?

Even though the USB-A ports are gone, other important ports remain. Ethernet, HDMI and the 3.5mm audio jack will still be on board. The power supply also remains internal, meaning you don't need any additional adapters or external power supplies.

Changes that make the Mac mini even better

The upcoming Mac mini brings with it some changes that you should keep an eye on. The lack of USB-A ports may seem disadvantageous at first glance, but the switch to USB-C and the powerful M4 chip make the device future-proof. If you are ready to embrace the new standards, the Mac mini, even in its new form, offers everything you need for your everyday work. (Image: Apple)
