Apple is about to open a new chapter in the Mac operating system with macOS 26. According to a recent report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the next version will not only have a new name but also a comprehensive redesign. This marks the biggest visual update since macOS Big Sur. The official unveiling is expected at WWDC.

macOS 26 is said to be named "Tahoe." This refers to Lake Tahoe in California, a well-known vacation spot and a popular second home for many Apple employees. Apple has been using geographical names from California for its macOS versions for years. Tahoe was not chosen by chance – according to Gurman, the lake, with its clear reflection of the sky and mountains, fits well with Apple's new design approach. The graphical redesign is intended to capture the calm, reflective aesthetic of the lake. While no specific design elements have been revealed yet, the description suggests that Apple is placing great emphasis on visual harmony and modern UI elements. It will be the first major redesign since macOS Big Sur, released in 2020.
A new naming scheme for all Apple systems
In addition to the new design, Apple is also changing the naming of its operating systems. In the future, all platforms – macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS – will simply use the year instead of their previous version numbers. macOS 16 will become macOS 26 because it is scheduled for release in late 2025. This principle is reminiscent of the naming system for cars, where models are also named after the coming year. Gurman reports that Apple will announce this change at WWDC. iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and all other systems will also be managed under the new scheme. The goal is apparently clearer communication across system versions.
The third major macOS redesign under a Californian name
Since switching to Californian place names, Apple has implemented two major visual overhauls: with macOS Yosemite in 2014 and macOS Big Sur in 2020. According to Gurman, macOS 26, codenamed Tahoe, will be the third major redesign in this series. So, it's not a minor cosmetic update, but a comprehensive modernization of the user interface.
