Apple is planning an unusual change: Instead of the expected iOS 19, it will release iOS 26. This isn't a random decision, but rather part of a larger rethinking of how version names are handled. This also includes a comprehensive design overhaul that extends to all of the company's operating systems.
Anyone who regularly uses Apple products is familiar with the current system: iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and others are assigned consecutive version numbers. But this numbering is becoming increasingly confusing. While iOS is already at version 18, watchOS is at 10, and visionOS at 2. This seems inconsistent. Apple now wants to change precisely that – and is revamping its entire naming system. According to a Bloomberg report , all Apple operating systems will in future use year numbers as version numbers.
Uniform naming for all systems
Instead of iOS 19, iOS 26 will be released this year. The same applies to the other operating systems:
- iPadOS 26 replaces iPadOS 19
- macOS 26 replaces macOS 16
- tvOS 26 replaces tvOS 19
- watchOS 26 replaces watchOS 12
- visionOS 26 replaces visionOS 3
The number 26 refers to the year in which these systems are primarily used. Even though the release will take place in 2025, iOS 26 will be named after the following year – similar to car models. Apple wants to provide more clarity, especially if you use multiple devices with different systems.
New design inspired by visionOS
In parallel with the new name, Apple is introducing a unified design concept. This is heavily influenced by visionOS – the operating system for the Vision Pro headset. With this, Apple is pursuing the goal of creating a consistent user experience across all platforms. Whether iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV: The interfaces should look similar and feel consistent in the future. The design update affects all major platforms: iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Apple is working to minimize visual differences and better coordinate functions across systems.
Announcement at WWDC 2025
The official presentation of the new naming scheme is scheduled to take place at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which begins on Monday, June 9, 2025. Apple is also expected to reveal initial details about the new design and features of iOS 26 and the other systems there.
