iPhone with 200 megapixels? Leaker tempers expectations

The camera has been one of the iPhone's most important selling points for years. Accordingly, reports concerning potential major leaps in resolution are followed with great interest. A 200-megapixel camera is considered by many to be the next logical step. However, new information from the supply chain shows that Apple is currently still quite a way off from achieving this.

Rumors about new iPhone technologies often surface long before their actual implementation. Especially with camera sensors, early discussions within the supply chain don't necessarily equate to concrete development. A well-known leaker has now provided new information on the current state of affairs and puts recent analyst reports into perspective.

The 200-megapixel camera is currently not part of active iPhone testing

According to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, a 200-megapixel camera for the iPhone is not currently in the active prototype testing phase. In a post on Weibo, he explains that while such sensors are being discussed within the supply chain, they have not yet been installed in iPhone prototypes undergoing practical testing.

Instead, Apple's camera team continues to focus on further developing its existing 48-megapixel systems. This approach aligns with previous reports that Apple is placing less emphasis on simply increasing resolution and more on consistent image quality and everyday technical improvements.

Assessment of the analyst forecast for 2028

The leaker's statements follow an analysis by Morgan Stanley suggesting that Apple could launch an iPhone with a 200-megapixel camera as early as 2028. Digital Chat Station does not fundamentally disagree with this assessment.

Back in May of last year, he mentioned that Apple was considering introducing such a sensor at a later date. However, his recent statements make it clear that development is not yet in the technical phase. Therefore, there is currently no talk of concrete testing or integration into actual iPhone prototypes.

Comparison with Samsung and potential advantages of high resolution

Other manufacturers are already further ahead in this area. Samsung introduced a 200-megapixel main camera for the first time in 2023 with the Galaxy S23 Ultra and has retained this technology in subsequent models.

Such a camera enables photos with significantly more detail and very high resolution. Images can be cropped more extensively or printed in large formats without any noticeable loss of image quality. From a purely technical standpoint, an iPhone could also benefit from these advantages.

Recent camera tests of the Pro models

According to Digital Chat Station, current prototypes of the Pro series are still testing a 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture. Additionally, a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with a longer focal length and a larger aperture is being tested.

These changes are expected to be introduced later this year with the iPhone 18 Pro models. The strategy behind them is clear: Apple is focusing on greater optical flexibility and better low-light performance, rather than significantly increasing the megapixel count.

200-megapixel sensors still in the early evaluation phase

The 200-megapixel sensors, which according to the leaker are also likely from Samsung, are currently only in the material or component evaluation phase. This phase primarily serves to examine basic feasibility, costs, and technical specifications.

Such an assessment is a very early step and does not mean that the sensors are about to be used in an iPhone. Integration into full prototypes is still a long way off.

Interest in multispectral imaging

Digital Chat Station also mentions that Apple is showing interest in multispectral imaging technology. This technology could theoretically enable improved material and object recognition as well as more advanced image processing.

According to the leaker, concrete tests have not yet begun. There is currently no indication that such features will appear in an iPhone in the near future.

iPhone camera: Focus on quality instead of megapixel leaps

The introduction of a 200-megapixel camera in the iPhone is not currently on the horizon. While the technology is being discussed within the supply chain, Apple is still working on optimizing its 48-megapixel cameras.
