According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the development of the foldable iPhone is behind schedule. While Apple is still aiming for an announcement in the second half of 2026, internally the project appears to be progressing more slowly than planned. The reasons lie primarily in technical challenges, which are almost unavoidable with a completely new device concept.

Kuo emphasizes that the delays do not necessarily mean a postponement of the presentation, but will likely have an impact on subsequent delivery. Especially in the initial phase, the iPhone Fold might only be available in limited quantities.

Production problems and limited yield

A key point in Kuo's analysis is the problem of high production yields. Especially with complex components like foldable displays and novel hinges, it is difficult to achieve high production volumes with consistent quality from the outset. Scaling up production also presents a further hurdle.

Kuo anticipates that, due to these factors, it could take until 2027 for Apple to reliably deliver the iPhone Fold in larger quantities. Combined with the expected strong demand, this could lead to shortages that might persist at least until the end of 2026.

Foxconn's role and current production status

It was originally expected that Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn would begin limited production of the iPhone Fold before the end of this year. However, the lack of corresponding reports suggests that the device is still in the technical validation phase. During this phase, the design, materials, and production processes are rigorously tested before mass production is approved.

The fact that this phase is taking longer than expected underlines the complexity of the project and explains why Apple is apparently not yet ready to ramp up production.

Comparison with previous analyst warnings

Kuo's assessment is not isolated. Mizuho Securities had previously pointed out that the iPhone Fold's market launch could be delayed until 2027 if Apple needs more time for critical design elements. The hinge mechanism, in particular, is considered a key component with little room for error.

While Mizuho raised the possibility of a delayed launch, Kuo continues to expect Apple to unveil the device in the fall of 2026. The main difference lies in the question of when the iPhone Fold will actually be available in larger quantities.

Planned design and technical specifications

According to current information, the iPhone Fold will have a book-style design. It is planned to have an external display measuring approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches, which will be used when the device is folded. When unfolded, an internal screen of around 7.8 inches will be available.

A key feature is said to be hinges made of liquid metal. These are intended to make the typical crease in the display virtually invisible. However, this very technology is considered challenging to manufacture and could be one of the reasons for the current production problems.
