While we have already read many rumors about the next iPhone generation, reports about the iPhone 2022 series keep popping up. Now the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken out and provided a number of details.

The iPhone 2022 series will reportedly include two 6.1-inch devices and two 6.7-inch devices. According to Kuo, there will no longer be a 5.4-inch option. Two of the models will be positioned as high-end versions, while the other two devices will be cheaper alternatives - similar to the iPhone 12 series.

"Apple will take mobile photography to a new level"

Apple introduced the 5.4-inch iPhone mini in 2020. Although sales are said to be poor according to analysts, Apple is planning an update this year. But after that, it seems that this will be over, if Kuo's information is correct. In addition, Kuo believes that Apple will give the iPhone 2022 series a significant camera upgrade. For example, a 48-megapixel camera is to be expected in the high-end models. The improved camera lens is intended to take mobile photography "to a new level." In the report to investors, Kuo writes:

In terms of pixel size, the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and the new iPhone 2H22 are 1.7um, 2um and 1.25um respectively. We believe that the new iPhone 2H22 could support 48MP direct output and 12MP output at the same time. With 12MP output, the CIS pixel size of the new iPhone 2H22 increases to about 2.5um, which is significantly larger than the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and larger than existing Android phones and close to the DSC level. We believe that the camera quality of the new iPhone 2H22 will take mobile phone camera photography to a new level.

But that's not all. Video recording quality is also expected to improve significantly. Together with a 48-megapixel lens that will also be able to output 12-megapixels, Kuo expects the high-end iPhones to be able to record 8K videos.

iPhone 2022: Is the hole-punch display coming?

He notes that in the future, watching iPhone-recorded videos on an 8K display or TV "will provide a better user experience." Since the best resolution for augmented and mixed reality is 8K to 16K, Kuo says the 48-megapixel camera in the 2022 iPhone will create videos and images that are "better suited for AR/MR devices." Kuo also expects Apple to move away from the notch to a "punch-hole" design next year. That means the high-end models will feature a hole-punch display. The said design is something that Android manufacturers have been using for some time to maximize the available display area while leaving room for the front camera. Since Kuo has a very high success rate in terms of Apple his statements are of course particularly exciting. Whether he will be right once again remains to be seen.
