Will Apple reduce the size of the well-known iPhone notch for the first time this year? Rumors have at least suggested it. Now panels have appeared that actually have a smaller notch and are supposedly intended for the iPhone 2021 series.
The Greek repair service provider iRepair has provided the US blog MacRumors with a picture leakedthat will show three displays in sizes 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch. The panels are intended for the iPhone 2021 models. The spicy part - the notch is visibly smaller because the earpiece speaker has been moved to the upper frame. Interestingly, this design adjustment was originally said to be for the iPhone 12 series. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and some other sources have already claimed that some Face ID components will be consolidated in the iPhone 2021 models, resulting in a smaller notch. But the reports did not mention that the speaker will be repositioned.
The Future of the Notch
The design of the so-called iPhone notch has remained unchanged since it was introduced on the iPhone X in 2017. While many users accept the notch in its current form, some fans would like to see Apple remove it completely in the future. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already stated in previous reports that Apple will first reduce the size of the notch before finally removing it completely. The roadmap envisages the first models without a notch appearing as early as 2022. These devices would only have a small hole at the top of the display. But that should not be the end goal. According to Kuo, Apple is working on developing an iPhone display completely without a notch or hole, including Touch ID under the display. The panel could debut in 2023.
