Apple has been pursuing the vision of an iPhone consisting of a simple glass plate for years. But when will such a device appear? The iPhone 12 could already be Apple's second step in this direction.

According to a new report, Apple could actually deliver the iPhone 12 with Touch ID 2.0 and without a notch, at least the high-end version. There have been rumors that such a device is being planned for some time. So far, however, reputable sources such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg have predicted such a device for 2020 or 2021. Kuo, however, is leaning towards 2021. According to this, an iPhone with dual biometric recognition technology - Touch ID and Face ID integrated into the display - is due to appear in 2021. The analyst confirmed this again today in a note to investors. According to his information, Apple will solve all technical problems in the next 18 months and complete such a device. But another report - also published today - refers to the iPhone 12. LetsGoDigital cites a presentation by Credit Suisse. According to this, the Swiss financial services provider believes that Apple will present a notchless iPhone as early as 2020. The device is said to have a TrueDepth camera in the display and use Touch ID 2.0 - but Face ID will be omitted. This version is said to be reserved for the high-end model. The report states:

Apple Inc. has filed three notable design patents in Japan showing a notch-free iPhone. The documentation was published by the JPO (Japan Patent Office) on December 23, 2019, and includes four images per patent.

Credit Suisse

The Swiss believe that the patents will be found in the iPhone 2020. In fact, such technology is said to already exist - other sources besides Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg have already claimed this. But the new technology is said to be in a very early stage, which is why 2021 is more likely - otherwise the Samsung Galaxy S10 would face competition.

Samsung's mistake

The Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung has already shown what happens when such technology is put into mass production without being fully developed. The Galaxy S10 has a fingerprint scanner under the display, but this has little to do with security. A user can crack the device in 13 minutes using a 3D printer. But it gets even better. In the meantime, the Galaxy S10 could be unlocked directly using a display film, as the device mistook every fingerprint for that of the owner - embarrassing.

Banks presentation very questionable

Both Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg have repeatedly stressed that Apple is working on such a device. However, the technical requirements have not yet been fully met. Of course, Apple could deliver in 2020, but 2021 is more likely. But apart from that, there was never any talk of a Face ID replacement. Previous reports have always predicted a device with Touch ID 2.0 and Face ID. Accordingly, today's report, based on a presentation by Credit Suisse, should be viewed with great skepticism. It remains to be seen whether Apple will succeed in making the leap in 2020 - but the elimination of Face ID is definitely unrealistic and can be classified as an absurd rumor.
