With the iPhone 17, Apple is bringing a feature to the base model that was previously reserved only for the Pro versions: ProMotion. This technology ensures a noticeably faster and more responsive display. This has been speculated about for a long time, and now there's further evidence that it's actually happening. If you've been relying on the standard model so far, the iPhone 17 will be significantly more attractive for you.

Apple introduced ProMotion with the iPad Pro in 2017. Since then, the technology has enabled a display that not only responds faster but also dynamically adapts depending on what's happening on the screen. Starting with the iPhone 13 Pro, the feature also came to the iPhone, but only to the Pro models. According to a new report, this will change with the iPhone 17. The technology is expected to be used in the regular iPhone for the first time.

What ProMotion brings

A ProMotion display increases the refresh rate to up to 120 Hz. This means animations, scrolling, and games run more smoothly. At the same time, the frequency can also be reduced to as low as 1 Hz. This saves energy because the screen isn't constantly running at peak performance. This has two advantages: You get a significantly better user experience, and your battery life is saved. This is especially exciting for anyone who does a lot with their iPhone—whether gaming, video editing, or just in everyday life. ProMotion makes the entire device noticeably faster.

Always-on display and standby mode

Another advantage: The flexible refresh rate adjustment makes it possible to use an always-on display. Apple introduced this feature with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. The display remains slightly active at all times, showing the time, notifications, and other information without you having to wake up the iPhone first. It also enables what's known as standby mode. The iPhone can be positioned this way and used as a clock or information display on your nightstand, for example.

Will ProMotion be available on all iPhone 17 models?

According to the new report, it's not yet clear whether the expected iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air will also be equipped with ProMotion. However, previous rumors suggest that the entire iPhone 17 series will benefit from it. It's therefore conceivable that every model of the new generation will get the adaptive display (via Bloomberg).

The iPhone 17 is significantly upgraded

If the reports are confirmed, the iPhone 17 will, for the first time, offer many premium features previously reserved for the Pro models. The ProMotion display, in particular, should make a big difference in everyday use. Added to that is an Always-On display and the new A19 chip. This makes the standard iPhone significantly more attractive and could become a better choice for many users – without having to immediately opt for the more expensive Pro.
