Apple is apparently working on a foldable iPhone. According to well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device will be equipped with special hinges made of liquid metal. The goal is to increase durability and avoid typical weaknesses of foldable smartphones, such as visible creases in the display. Mass production could begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The market launch is expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
Foldable smartphones aren't a new concept, but the technology isn't yet fully developed. Many devices struggle with issues like display bends, fragile hinges, or bulky casings. Apple apparently wants to improve this. According to Kuo, the solution lies in a material that has previously only been used in small iPhone components: liquid metal. This should make the upcoming foldable iPhone more stable and durable.
Apple uses liquid metal for the hinge
The hinge is one of the most critical points in foldable smartphones. Apple plans to use liquid metal, which is processed using a die-casting process. According to Kuo, this material offers several advantages. It is intended to improve the flatness of the display when unfolded and ensure that no deep creases form when folded. This is precisely the visible problem with many current foldables. Liquid metal is not new territory for Apple. Previously, it has been used in SIM ejection pins, for example. However, the foldable iPhone would be the first time this material has been used in a component subject to high mechanical stress, such as the hinge. According to Kuo, Dongguan EonTec will be the exclusive supplier of the liquid metal.
Display sizes and design
Previous information suggests that the foldable iPhone will have a 7.8-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover display. The design is said to be book-like, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold. A classic folding design like the Galaxy Z Flip is not planned. The device will therefore look more like a small tablet that folds up.
Cameras, Touch ID and housing dimensions
The device is said to have two rear cameras and one front camera. Touch ID is expected to be integrated into the power button. When unfolded, the iPhone is said to be just 4.5 millimeters thin. When folded, it is said to be between 9 and 9.5 millimeters thick. That would be comparatively slim for a foldable (via X).
Production and market launch schedule
According to Kuo, mass production of the foldable iPhone is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. A market launch would therefore be realistic in late 2026 or early 2027. Until then, Apple could continue to work on optimizing materials and mechanics to avoid typical weaknesses of other manufacturers.
