Even before the official launch of the iPhone 17 Pro, new speculation is circulating. This time, it's not about the design or processor, but about the camera. An anonymous tipster claims to have seen exclusive information from an alleged Apple commercial. It mentions three camera upgrades that were previously unexpected.

The information was published by MacRumors. The source is an anonymous tipster who claims to be familiar with an iPhone 17 Pro commercial. The commercial was allegedly produced by the Slovenian production company Division Film, where Apple is listed as a client. The information cannot be verified, but is specific enough to at least be taken seriously as a rumor. MacRumors correctly categorizes the report: unconfirmed, but potentially relevant. This wouldn't be the first time that an early tip turned out to be correct in retrospect. What's intriguing is the content of the statements—three alleged camera innovations, at least one of which seems realistic.

Telephoto lens with 8x zoom and variable focal point

According to the report, the iPhone 17 Pro will be the first to feature a telephoto lens with 8x optical zoom. Currently, the iPhone 16 Pro offers a maximum of 5x zoom. The special feature: The new lens will be able to be moved mechanically to control different focal lengths. This would be technically complex, but not impossible. Such a variable zoom would be a clear upgrade for mobile photography. Whether this complex mechanism can be implemented in a housing as compact as the iPhone remains to be seen. So far, no indications of this technology have surfaced in the supply chain – which is rather unusual when it comes to hardware changes at Apple.

New physical camera control button on the top edge

The second claim is even more unusual: The iPhone 17 Pro will have an additional button on the top of the case, specifically for camera functions. The idea is reminiscent of dedicated shutter buttons on digital cameras or gaming phones. This information is difficult to verify, as case manufacturers and CAD drawings usually reveal such details early on. Currently, there is no indication of a new button. Nevertheless, if Apple wants to specifically target professional users with this, it would be a logical step. However, it is also clear that this information is significantly more speculative than the one regarding the zoom lens.

Pro camera app with advanced features

The third claim seems most plausible: a Pro version of the Camera app. This will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and offer photo and video professionals more control. Features such as simultaneous shooting with multiple lenses, manual control of focus, exposure, and ISO, as well as expanded video formats could be integrated. Back in April, YouTuber Jon Prosser stated that precisely such features are coming – but only for the Pro models. Apple itself has also revised and simplified the Camera app with iOS 26. A clear separation between the basic app and the professional app therefore makes sense. This would allow Apple to more specifically serve two user groups: casual photographers and demanding creators.

iPhone 17 Pro rumors: What is realistic – and what isn’t?

Whether the iPhone 17 Pro's camera will actually get all three new features remains questionable. The most likely scenario is the introduction of a new Pro camera app, because this can be implemented purely on the software side, and Apple has already done some groundwork in this direction. The 8x optical zoom would be technically feasible, but it surfaced unusually late in the rumor mill. With hardware components such as lenses, it's very rare that no reliable leaks emerge until shortly before release. The new camera button is the most speculative detail – there's no confirmation from any more reliable sources. One thing is certain: the camera will once again play a central role on the iPhone 17 Pro. Whether with a movable telephoto lens, an additional button, or a new Pro app – Apple will come up with something to underscore the "Pro" claim. The unveiling is expected in mid-September.
