iOS 27 is more than just the next annual update. With this version, Apple is setting the course for a new chapter in iPhone development. The focus isn't on further developing existing devices, but rather on preparing for a completely new format: the first foldable iPhone. The software is being specifically optimized for this new device, which is scheduled to be released by the end of 2026 at the earliest. This changes not only the hardware but also what iOS must be able to do.
Apple will soon begin development of iOS 27. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the focus will be on features specifically designed for a foldable iPhone. The device hasn't been officially announced yet, but internal preparations are in full swing. Apple is apparently planning a book-sized model that can be folded open – similar to devices Samsung has been offering for years. iOS 27 will be the first to support this new hardware class.
iOS 27 as the software basis for the iPhone Fold
Gurman reports in his "Power On" newsletter that Apple is specifically prioritizing features with iOS 27 that are tailored to the upcoming foldable device. These include operation, user interface, and transitions that are specifically tailored to the larger internal display and the smaller external display. However, according to the report, traditional iPhones will not be disadvantaged. There are no plans for users of conventional iPhones to miss out on new UI features next year.
iPhone Fold: What is known so far
The foldable iPhone, which Apple is currently developing internally, is expected to feature a roughly 7.8-inch main display on the inside and a 5.5-inch outer screen. This design is similar to devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, but will likely take a different approach in terms of materials and workmanship. A redesigned hinge made of titanium and stainless steel is intended to provide greater stability and significantly reduce the display crease, which is often critical in foldable devices. The goal is a durable device without the typical weaknesses of earlier foldable models.
Design decision: book format instead of flip phone
According to Gurman, Apple chose a book-style format because it resonates better in the Chinese market than the folding design used in devices like the Galaxy Z Flip. China apparently plays a central role in the strategy. At the same time, Apple expects there to be demand for a foldable iPhone in the US as well—especially among users who consciously avoid buying Android devices.
Touch ID instead of Face ID – for space reasons
Another detail concerns authentication. To save space in the device, Apple is apparently foregoing Face ID. Instead, it's using a Touch ID function integrated into the side power button. This solution is already familiar from some iPad models. It saves space and allows for a slimmer casing.
Cameras and price ranges
There are also hints about the camera configuration. A dual camera with two 48-megapixel sensors is planned. In terms of price, the foldable iPhone is expected to be the most expensive iPhone model ever. Current estimates place the starting price at around $2,000. This clearly indicates that Apple is targeting a premium segment and early adopters who are willing to invest more for an innovative device.

Despite its clear focus on the foldable iPhone, iOS 27 remains a complete operating system for all supported iPhones. Classic models will continue to benefit from new features and improvements. Apple apparently plans to make the foldable features modular, so they only appear on devices that actually need them.
