iPhone 17 Pro Leak: SIM card slot remains in some countries

A new leak is causing a stir around the iPhone 17 Pro. An image shared by well-known leaker Majin Bu allegedly shows a model that still has a physical SIM card tray. This contradicts reports that Apple wants to accelerate the switch to eSIM worldwide. Apparently, the manufacturer is pursuing different strategies depending on the market.

The rollout of the eSIM in the US has long been complete. Since the iPhone 14, there have been no models with a physical SIM slot there. The iPhone 17 Pro might not follow this path everywhere. A leaked image suggests that a traditional SIM card can still be used in at least some countries. This may postpone the complete abolition of the slot for another year.

Current status of the eSIM migration

Reports from The Information suggested that Apple plans to remove the physical SIM card tray in additional countries by 2025. However, the report did not specify any specific markets. China may not be affected for the time being due to regulatory reasons or network structure. In the US, the eSIM strategy has been in place consistently since the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 rely entirely on the digital version. However, this only applies to this market so far. Apple continues to ship slot-equipped models worldwide.

Advantages of the eSIM from Apple's perspective

Apple highlighted several advantages when introducing the eSIM in 2022. A digital SIM cannot simply be removed from a stolen or lost iPhone, increasing security. Furthermore, up to eight eSIM profiles can be managed simultaneously, eliminating the need to purchase and change physical SIM cards while traveling.
