The iPhone 17 and the "iPhone 17 Air" are looming. According to a report, Apple will be bringing an exciting innovation to market with the iPhone 17: All four models of the new iPhone generation will be equipped with energy-saving LTPO displays. This technology allows the refresh rate to be adjusted dynamically and thus save energy without affecting performance. What is particularly exciting is that Apple could extend the ProMotion technology, which was previously only available on the Pro models, to all iPhone 17 models. This would give the entire series the option of a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

The next iPhone generation is already the focus of numerous speculations and rumors, and the iPhone 17 could bring a significant innovation. The entire model range, including possibly an "iPhone 17 Air", is said to have energy-saving LTPO displays that offer a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. This would be the first time that Apple has extended the popular ProMotion technology to all models. The South Korean platform ETNews reportedthat Samsung and LG are possible suppliers of these displays for the iPhone 17 models.

What is LTPO and how does it work?

LTPO stands for "Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide". That sounds complicated, but essentially means that this technology allows the refresh rate on OLED displays to be flexibly adjusted. For the iPhone 17, this means that the frame rate can go up to 120 Hz when there is a lot of movement involved, such as when scrolling or watching videos. At the same time, the refresh rate can be lowered for static content, which in turn reduces energy consumption. This flexible adjustment is particularly relevant for smartphone design, as it optimizes battery life.

ProMotion for all models – a real step forward

ProMotion was introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021 and has been an exclusive feature of the Pro models ever since. This technology enables a variable refresh rate that automatically adapts to usage. The iPhone 17 is now said to be equipped with ProMotion on all models, which would be a real plus as it significantly increases user comfort. The advantages at a glance:

  • Smoother scrolling and animations: With a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, animations and content are displayed more smoothly. This is a clear advantage, especially when surfing, gaming or streaming videos.
  • Energy-saving always-on screen: LTPO technology allows the refresh rate to be greatly reduced during inactivity – down to 1 Hz, to be precise. This could allow the iPhone 17 to offer an energy-saving always-on display that shows important information even when the device is locked.

Thanks to the new technology, the iPhone 17 would be significantly ahead of current models, which are equipped with 60 Hz displays.

The role of Samsung and LG as display suppliers

According to the ETNews report, Samsung and LG will supply the new LTPO displays for all iPhone 17 models. The collaboration with these display giants shows that Apple is committed to high quality to increase the performance of its devices. Samsung and LG are among the leading providers of OLED technology and have already supplied the Pro displays for Apple in the past.

comparison to the current iPhone models

Compared to the iPhone 16 models, which are currently still equipped with 60 Hz displays, the iPhone 17 will make a significant leap forward. Users who place great value on a smooth and responsive display will particularly benefit from the ProMotion technology. In addition, the LTPO technology is a decisive factor when it comes to longer battery life and flexible adjustment of the refresh rate. In combination, these features could significantly improve the user experience.

iPhone 17: Planned release in September 2025

If the current cycles are adhered to, the iPhone 17 will probably be introduced in September 2025 and go on sale shortly thereafter. Until then, there will probably be some more information and rumors that will further round out the picture of the new iPhone generation. (Photo by Unsplash / Igor Omilaev)
