With each new iPhone generation, interest in possible design changes and technical innovations increases. When it comes to the iPhone 17, three well-known leakers now agree: Majin Bu, Fixed Focus Digital and Ice Universe have published an identical CAD drawing of the new line-up. These sketches show the various camera layouts of the upcoming models for the first time and provide an insight into the possible differences between the variants. Although CAD drawings do not allow any definitive conclusions to be drawn about the final design, they do provide a reliable indication of the arrangement of important elements such as the camera, buttons and sensors. The clear differences in the camera arrangement between the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air and the Pro models are particularly striking.

In the past, there have often been conflicting reports about upcoming iPhone models, but this time there is unusually great agreement among the leakers. Majin Bu, who has already attracted attention with accurate predictions about the iPhone 16e, was the first to publish a report about the new iPhone 17 line-up in early January. Shortly afterwards, Fixed Focus Digital and Ice Universe also confirmed the authenticity of the drawing by sharing the sketch. This makes it likely that the designs shown are actually based on official Apple plans.

The CAD drawing of the iPhone 17 line-up

The published CAD drawings are intended to provide an initial overview of the position of the camera modules, buttons and sensors. They do not show any final details about the housing material or color design, but focus on the technical placement of the external components. A direct comparison with previous leaks shows that the positions of the flash and LiDAR sensor are on the right side. However, it is unclear whether the camera module is raised overall or - as some renderings suggest - is divided into two separate elevations. A special feature of the drawing is an area marked in red, which is not intended to represent a visible element. Rather, it could be a technical marking that no longer appears in the final models.

Three different camera layouts within the model series

The drawings show clear differences between the camera modules of the individual models.

  • The iPhone 17 Air has a single camera in a horizontal bulge. This could indicate a compact design and a particularly lightweight housing.
  • The base iPhone 17 uses two cameras arranged vertically. This arrangement is already known from the iPhone 16 and could indicate an improved standard camera.
  • The iPhone 17 Pro models have a triangular arrangement with three cameras. Both the Pro and Pro Max share this layout.

Although the differences in the drawings initially appear uneven, it is to be expected that Apple will ensure a harmonious appearance by using a uniform design for the housing surfaces.

Comparison with previous leaks and renderings

The new CAD drawings partially confirm renderings that have already appeared previously. The iPhone 17 Pro Max in particular has similarities with designs by Sonny Dickson. In these renderings, it can be seen that the arrangement of the camera elements differs from previous models. There are also initial speculations about the final design of the iPhone 17 Air. It could be a particularly slim and light variant, possibly with a new choice of material. However, these speculations can only be verified with later leaks or official announcements.

What do these leaks mean for the upcoming iPhone models?

The designs shown could indicate that Apple is revising the camera system and differentiating the model series more clearly from one another. The iPhone 17 Air, which is equipped with a single camera, is particularly exciting. This raises the question of whether Apple is using new sensor technologies to achieve high image quality with just one lens. There could also be further improvements in the Pro models. The triangular camera arrangement suggests a new periscope technology that could enable an improved zoom function. In the iPhone 17 Pro Max, this could result in an even more powerful camera that is specifically aimed at photo and video enthusiasts.

First glimpses of the iPhone 17: What the leaks reveal

The new CAD drawings give a first impression of the iPhone 17 line-up and show clear differences in the camera arrangement. While the iPhone 17 Air could be designed as a lightweight model with a single camera, the Pro Max remains the most powerful variant with its triple camera technology. Although the final designs have not yet been officially confirmed, the consistent leaks from three renowned insiders give a credible outlook on what Apple is planning for 2025. More information is expected in the coming months that will further complete the picture of the iPhone 17. (Image: MajinBuOfficial / X)
