The iPhone 17 Air is currently making the rounds on social media. Well-known Apple leaker Majin Bu shared an image comparing the thickness of the upcoming iPhone with the iPhone 17 Pro. The photo shows two dummy models, which he claims are based on realistic measurements. And the difference is immediately noticeable: The iPhone 17 Air appears extremely thin, almost unusual for a modern smartphone. This raises expectations.

The released image provides the first visual impression of how slim the new model will be. It will be the thinnest iPhone yet – and with a 6.6-inch display. There are also other indications that Apple is deliberately focusing on lightness and compactness with this model.

iPhone 17 Air vs. iPhone 17 Pro: Thickness comparison

According to the image, the iPhone 17 Air is significantly thinner than the iPhone 17 Pro. The dummy models clearly demonstrate the difference: The Air model appears almost half as thick as the Pro. Concrete numbers confirm this. The iPhone 17 Air is said to be 5.5 mm thick. The iPhone 17 Pro is 8.725 mm thick—even slightly thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro, which is 8.25 mm thick. The Air thus relies on a completely different design concept. No iPhone has ever been thinner.

Technical specifications of the iPhone 17 Air

Even though the focus is clearly on the new casing, the iPhone 17 Air is technically well-equipped. Here's an overview of the features revealed so far:

  • 48-megapixel rear camera: Apple uses a high-resolution main camera.
  • 6.6-inch display: This makes it larger than the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 standard model.
  • Camera Control: The new camera control option is also expected to be integrated. Whether this will involve a new interface or physical buttons is not yet known.
  • A single speaker: Unlike the Pro models, which feature stereo speakers, the Air will only have one speaker. This suggests a particularly slim design.

Planned market launch and positioning

The iPhone 17 Air is scheduled for release in 2025, presumably during the usual fall period. It will be unveiled alongside the other iPhone 17 models. The Air variant is intended to introduce a new category within the iPhone lineup: lighter, thinner, and perhaps even more affordable. Apple seems to be aiming to appeal to users who prefer a compact, elegant device and can do without some premium features (via X).

iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone yet

The iPhone 17 Air is likely to stand out primarily due to its extremely thin design. The leaked image provides the best comparison yet with the iPhone 17 Pro. At just 5.5 mm, it's significantly thinner than all previous models. Technically, it offers solid specs with a 48 MP camera, a large display, and presumably a simplified audio solution. Anyone looking for a particularly slim iPhone should keep an eye on this model. If you want to learn more about the iPhone 17 Air, it's worth checking out the upcoming updates.
