The iPhone 12 will have a number of new features and a redesign - that much is clear. But which models will actually have the new camera technology?
According to a new report from Fast Company, at least one model of the iPhone 12 series will receive the new 3D camera. Apple has been working on the technology for around two years - according to the anonymous source cited by Fast Company. The report states that report:
At least one of this year's iPhones will have a 3D depth camera on the back, a source with knowledge of Fast Company confirms.
The camera - actually a laser, sensor and software system - emits light to measure the distance between the phone and various objects and surfaces in front of the phone. This detailed depth information enables new photo and video effects, as well as better augmented reality experiences.
iPhone engineers have been working on the rear 3D camera, known as "World Facing," for at least two years. It was on a short list of potential feature enhancements for new iPhones, but until this year, it hadn't made its way into the future. Frankly, Apple could decide to ditch it this year, too.
One or two iPhone 12 models with 3D camera?
According to this, the laser is said to come from the company Lumentum from San Jose. This would fit in with the current picture, as Lumentum already supplies the sensors for the TrueDepth camera. So far, it has been reported that two devices are said to have this type of camera technology - but which models are possible? The analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a list some time ago and it looks like this:
- iPhone 5.4-inch OLED display: dual camera without 3D sensor technology
- iPhone 6.1-inch OLED display: dual camera without 3D sensor technology
- iPhone 6.1-inch OLED display: triple camera with 3D sensor technology
- iPhone 6.7-inch OLED display: triple camera with 3D sensor technology
