Apple is expected to announce new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with M2 chip “in a few days,” according to Mark Gurman.

The new 11- and 12.9-inch models, codenamed J617 and J620, will be the first update to the high-end iPad since April 2021, when both models received the M1 chip and a new 12.9-inch MiniLED display. The upcoming iPad Pro models are expected to receive Apple's M2 chip for the first time in a year and a half, offering faster performance and possibly new charging features. As for the design, the new iPads will look like the current models, with no major changes expected. Previous rumors suggested that the smaller 11-inch model would get a MiniLED display, which is currently only found in the larger 12.9-inch device. But that new feature is no longer expected.

New iPad Pro models are presented via press release

The new iPad Pro models could also come with some sort of MagSafe charging feature, as previous reports have said. There is also a possibility that the new pro tablets will feature a wireless charging feature that will allow users to charge their iPhone or AirPods on the back of the iPad. Given the expected gradual update of the upcoming iPads, Apple is no longer planning an event for October. Apple is expected to announce the new iPads and the updates to the Mac lineup via press releases and updates on its website. In addition to new iPad devices, Apple is also expected to release iPadOS 16 later this month. Unlike in previous years, this year's iPadOS and iOS updates were not released at the same time.

New Mac devices

Instead, Apple has delayed the release of iPadOS 16 until later in the fall to allow more time to continue developing the update and work on Stage Manager. Stage Manager is a new multitasking and windowing system for certain iPad models that is still plagued with bugs despite the release of iPadOS 16 in just a few weeks. In addition, claimed Gurman said that although Apple wants to introduce new Mac devices this year, they will follow later. Whether in October or even November remains to be seen. In any case, he assumes that new Mac models will not be announced at the same time as the updated iPad Pro. (Image: Apple)
