Which display technology could replace LCD or OLED in the future? Many people are asking themselves this question – one person wants to know the answer.

A new report was published over the weekend that now contains concrete information about Apple's plans for 2020 and 2021. The details come from TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The Apple oracle claims to have learned that Apple is planning to use mini-LED displays in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. According to his sources, the devices should be released in late 2020 or mid-2021 at the latest. Both product lines - the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro - are expected to use around 10,000 mini-LEDs. For comparison: Apple's Pro Display XDR only has 570 LEDs. But why should Apple prefer mini-LED panels over OLED? Kuo has an answer for that too. Both technologies have a comparable color space, although mini-LEDs do not burn in as easily. That's why Apple prefers this technology to OLED for medium or large displays.

New iPad Pro and MacBook Pro coming this year

This would also significantly reduce Apple's dependence on Samsung - a strategic move, as Apple could source mini-LED panels from many different suppliers. Kuo notes that this display technology is significantly more expensive, which is why a price increase for both product lines is beyond doubt.

Apple is also expected to introduce a new iPad Pro and MacBook Pro generation this fall.
