Rumors that Apple plans to introduce new iPad and MacBook models with OLED displays have been documented in the past, and now reports suggest that this could happen next year.
The Taiwanese news site DigiTimes reported Citing suppliers, Apple could introduce iPad and MacBook models with OLED screens next year. Currently, OLED panels are used in the Apple Watch and iPhones. iPad and MacBook models, on the other hand, still rely on LCD. OLED displays have several advantages over LCDs, including higher brightness, improved contrast with deeper blacks, wider viewing angles and more. Since OLED panels are significantly more expensive, this could be the reason why Apple has not yet equipped either iPad or MacBook models with them - observers said. In November reported Korean website The Elec reported that Apple plans to introduce new iPad Pro models with OLED displays in the second half of 2021. The panels are to be manufactured by Samsung and LG. This rumor was subsequently confirmed by Barclays analysts commented.
iPad and MacBook models: Apple could use both display technologies
They have stated that nothing of the sort is planned for 2021. iPad models with OLED panels could appear in 2022 at the earliest. LCD displays with miniLED backlighting are currently expected to be introduced this year. At least that is what various sources are predicting. Accordingly, it seems quite unlikely that Apple will update its display technology twice in one year. Considering the fact that miniLED backlit displays offer many of the same advantages as OLED displays, such as high brightness and high contrast, there is a possibility that Apple will end up offering a mix of both display technologies in its iPad and Mac range.
