A low-cost external monitor and a new Mac Pro are also planned. Bloomberg claims that the new iMac will have a similar design to the Pro Display XDR. This includes the removal of the "chin area" on the bottom and a flat back instead of the current curved design. It will replace the existing 21.5- and 27-inch models.
iMac 2021 models: Known by the code names J456 and J457
The new models will slim down the thick black bezels around the screen and do away with the large metal chin area in favor of a design similar to Apple's Pro Display XDR monitor. These iMacs will have a flat back, moving away from the curved back of the current iMac. Apple plans to introduce two versions - codenamed J456 and J457 - to replace the existing 21.5-inch and 27-inch models later this year.
The new design is said to be the biggest change. Two new versions of the Mac Pro are also planned. In terms of design, one of these devices will resemble the current model. The second device will be only half the size. The smaller Mac Pro could "evoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube," according to Bloomberg. The news site further claims that the larger version of the Mac Pro will be powered by an Intel processor, while the smaller model will be equipped with an Apple Silicon chip.
New Apple Monitor to come
In addition to new iMac and Mac Pro models, Apple is also working on a new external monitor. Development is said to have only recently started. This model will be advertised as the successor to the Thunderbolt Display and will be positioned at a lower price than the Pro Display XDR.
The cheaper monitor would have a screen designed for consumer rather than professional use and would not have the brightness and contrast ratio of the top-of-the-line model. Apple last released a consumer monitor called the Thunderbolt Display in 2011 for $999, but discontinued it in 2016.
