Apple is apparently planning to significantly further develop its HomePod. According to current reports, a new HomePod with a 7-inch display, A18 chip and extended smart home functions will be launched in 2025. The device will be equipped with a new operating system called "homeOS" and could become a central part of Apple's smart home strategy.

Smart home devices are now an integral part of many households and Apple is apparently looking to gain a stronger foothold in this market. With the new HomePod, which is rumored to be the first to feature a display, Apple could introduce a versatile and competitive device. Previous reports suggest that the new HomePod will be much more than just a smart speaker - it could become the hub of your connected home.

The 7-inch display: A new approach for the HomePod

A key feature of the new HomePod will be a 7-inch LCD display, which will be supplied by Chinese manufacturer Tianma. According to Report According to DigiTimes, the production cost for these panels is just $10 a piece, which could indicate a competitive selling price. The display opens up numerous new possibilities. Similar to competing products such as Google's Nest Hub or Amazon's Echo Show, the HomePod could display information such as smart home data, calendar, weather and much more. Playing videos or showing live camera images will also be possible thanks to the display.

More performance thanks to the A18 chip

The heart of the new HomePod will be Apple's powerful A18 chip, which is designed to ensure smooth performance. This processor enables the device to take on demanding tasks such as processing image data or integrating advanced AI functions. In addition, the HomePod will be equipped with "Apple Intelligence", a technology that makes it easier to control smart home devices and improves interaction with Siri. This makes the new HomePod a real all-rounder for your home.

New operating system: homeOS

The new operating system "homeOS" is being developed specifically for Apple's upcoming smart home devices. It is designed to offer a customizable user interface based on widgets. This means you can display your most important information directly on the home screen and design it according to your needs. According to Gurman, the HomePod with homeOS will be able to support functions such as FaceTime video calls. The device will be equipped with an integrated camera for this purpose. This means that you can use the HomePod not only for smart home tasks, but also as a communication device.

A strong focus on smart home functions

Another focus of the new HomePod is its smart home capabilities. The device will be fully compatible with Apple's HomeKit and could also serve as a security hub. For example, it should be possible to display live images from security cameras directly on the display. Reports suggest that Apple is also planning a wireless security camera that will be specifically designed to work with the new HomePod. This would allow Apple to create a comprehensive smart home ecosystem that covers all important aspects - from controlling the lighting to monitoring your home.

How does the new HomePod compare to the competition?

With these features, the new HomePod will compete directly with devices such as Google's Nest Hub and Amazon's Echo Show, which have already made a name for themselves in the smart home space. Apple's decision to keep the production costs of the display low suggests that the new HomePod could come to market at a competitive price. Whether the device will continue to operate under the HomePod branding or be given a new name is not known for now.

What happens to the current HomePod?

In addition to the new HomePod, there are rumors about a possible update to the HomePod mini, which could also be released next year. However, it is unclear whether the classic HomePod in its current form will also receive an upgrade.

The HomePod 2025: More than just a smart speaker?

The new HomePod with a 7-inch display, A18 chip and homeOS could be the next big step in Apple's smart home strategy. With its focus on customizability, performance and versatile use, it stands out from its predecessors. The combination of a customizable operating system, advanced hardware and a competitive price could make the new HomePod a real competitor for existing smart home hubs. Whether it will live up to the high expectations, however, remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Apple has the chance to have a lasting impact on the smart home market with this device. If you want to be part of this innovative ecosystem, it's worth keeping an eye on the new HomePod. (Photo by Unsplash / Daniel Cañibano)
