According to a new report, Samsung has begun developing more advanced OLED panels to meet Apple's requirements for use in future iPads and Macs.
According to previous reports, Apple plans to launch an iPad with an OLED display from Samsung in 2024. However, for larger displays, Apple is seeking OLED panels with a "two-stack tandem structure," which has two emissive layers, doubling the brightness and quadrupling the lifespan of OLED displays. As for iPhones, all models use a single-stack structure. Apple justifies the requirement for two-stack panels by citing the longer lifespan of iPads. These more advanced panels are expected to be used in MacBooks and iMacs as well.
Samsung develops tandem OLED displays
Apple currently only uses OLED displays for the iPhone and Apple Watch. Macs and iPads are limited to LCD and mini-LED displays. Apple and Samsung were reportedly working together to develop a 10.86-inch OLED panel in 2021. However, work on the display was halted in the third quarter because the project was reportedly too expensive for Samsung and the company was unable to produce enough panels at the right price. Now Samsung is actively working on developing the two-stack panels, which Samsung calls the T-series (T for tandem), according to The Elec.
First iPads could use new display technology in 2024
The Korean company's display division aims to develop the T1 material set to receive customer evaluation, with the aim of putting it into commercial production next year. When the necessary production facilities are in place, Samsung will proceed with the development of its successor, the T2, for which commercial production is scheduled to begin in 2024.
