For over two years, there have been rumors that Apple is working on adding satellite support to the iPhone. First, this feature was linked to the iPhone 13 series, now to the iPhone 14 series. While this feature could help iPhone users report emergencies in areas without cellular service, there is now discussion about whether Apple could also offer this feature for a new generation of Apple Watch.

In his latest “Power On” newsletter explained Mark Gurman that the Apple Watch Series 8, specifically the Pro model, could have satellite support.

The company has also discussed internally the idea of adding satellite capabilities to its watches, which could make sense for a future version of the new, more robust Apple Watch Pro.

Apple Watch Series 8 will be introduced in September

In the current newsletter issue, Gurman discusses how important it might be to equip the iPhone with satellite support.

This is an advance over the current feature on the iPhone and Apple Watch, which lets you quickly make emergency calls and share your location. The features will also outperform standalone satellite-based devices like the Garmin inReach. The prospect of an iPhone that can reach emergency responders even without a cellular connection is just the beginning of what Apple is planning. Eventually, users could have worldwide internet access and make regular calls via satellite connections. The combination of fast 5G networks and satellite services could one day make the iPhone the most powerful global communications device.

Although this feature is a candidate for the first generation of Apple Watch Pro, there is a possibility that the feature will only be introduced in later models.
