The upcoming Apple Watch Series 8 may be able to tell its wearer if they have a fever when their body temperature is higher than normal, thanks to a new built-in sensor.
In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter writes Mark Gurman has confirmed that the Apple Watch Series 8 will feature a new body temperature sensor, assuming the sensor passes Apple's internal testing. However, Gurman notes that he believes the sensor could be used in both the standard Series 8 and a new "rugged model" designed for athletes. Unlike a traditional thermometer, the Apple Watch doesn't directly display current body temperature, but alerts the wearer if it detects a higher body temperature.
Apple Watch Series 8: Nothing will change in the processor
There are some new health-tracking features to expect for this year's Apple Watch. In April, I reported that Apple was looking to add body temperature detection to the Series 8, assuming the feature is accepted in internal testing. I now believe the feature is intended for both the regular Apple Watch Series 8 and a new rugged version for extreme sports enthusiasts.
In January, Gurman claimed that internal talks about a body temperature sensor for the Apple Watch Series 8 had slowed down. Since then, enthusiasm for the feature has apparently grown at Apple, driving development forward. Apple has frequently added new sensors and health features to the Apple Watch, most recently the blood oxygen sensor in the Apple Watch Series 6. Aside from the new body temperature sensor, the Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to retain the same design as the Apple Watch Series 7 and also use the same processor as the Series 6 and 7.
