Apple plans fundamental change to iPhone storage design

Apple has always strived to take the performance and efficiency of its devices to new levels. The company is currently planning a major innovation: the introduction of a new memory design that is specifically designed to increase the performance of artificial intelligence (AI).

With each new iPhone generation, Apple is committed to innovations that improve the user experience and set new technical standards. The upcoming changes are aimed at meeting the growing demands of modern AI applications. But these innovations also bring challenges and interesting technical developments.

The planned storage design

The Elec according to Apple plans to switch to a so-called discrete memory design by 2026. Currently, the iPhone uses the "package-on-package" (PoP) method, in which the low-power double data rate (LPDDR) DRAM is placed directly on the system-on-chip (SoC). This technology was first introduced in 2010 with the iPhone 4 and has since established itself as a space-saving solution. But that's exactly where the catch lies: For AI applications that require faster data transfer rates and more memory bandwidth, this design is no longer sufficient. The new approach is intended to physically separate the DRAM from the SoC. This step enables greater memory bandwidth and faster data processing that is specifically tailored to the needs of AI applications.

Samsung, one of Apple's most important suppliers, has already started developing the necessary technologies. The company is working on the next generation of LPDDR6 memory, which is expected to offer two to three times the data transfer speed of the current LPDDR5X. In addition, a more advanced variant called LPDDR6-PIM (Processor-in-Memory) is expected to integrate processing functions directly into the memory. This innovation could significantly increase the efficiency and performance of future iPhones.

Advantages of the new design

  • Increased bandwidth and speed: By physically separating the SoC and memory, the number of input and output pins (I/O pins) can be increased. This leads to an improved data transfer rate and a larger number of parallel data channels.
  • More efficient thermal management: Since the memory is separated from the SoC, heat is dissipated better. This prevents performance degradation due to overheating and improves system stability.
  • Greater flexibility: The new design allows the integration of more powerful memory components that are not limited by the size of the SoC.

  • Space requirements: The new design requires more space inside the iPhone. To make this possible, Apple could make the SoC smaller or make the battery more compact.
  • Increased power consumption: Separate storage may require more power, which could affect battery life.
  • Complexity of the transition: The transition to a new design requires significant investment in research and development. In addition, Apple's engineers must find solutions to keep latency low despite the physical separation of the components.
  • Design adjustments: To accommodate the additional storage, the iPhone's layout may need to be adjusted. This could affect the size and weight of the device.

Introduction and Schedule

The changes are expected to be introduced with the 2026 iPhone generation, possibly the "iPhone 18." Until then, Apple will need time to overcome technical challenges such as miniaturizing SoCs and optimizing layout. It is expected that the use of new storage solutions will enable Apple to realize the full potential of its AI technologies. At the same time, the change could further cement Apple's competitive advantage in the smartphone market.

Apple's plans to fundamentally change the memory architecture of its iPhones are a significant step towards more powerful and future-proof devices. The physical separation of SoC and memory will significantly benefit AI applications, particularly through higher data transfer rates and better heat dissipation. The collaboration with Samsung and the use of new memory technologies such as LPDDR6 underline Apple's goal of remaining a technological leader in the coming years. For users, this means that the iPhones of the future could not only be faster and smarter, but also offer new possibilities that we can only dream of today. However, there are still many technical hurdles to overcome before they are launched.
