Apple is preparing to improve and possibly expand its lineup of external monitors for Mac and iPad users. A new report says the company is working on "several new external monitors" with Apple Silicon inside, including a new version of the Pro Display XDR.

Apple currently sells two external monitors: the Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR. The former was launched earlier this year and starts at €1,749, while the Pro Display XDR was launched in 2019 and starts at a whopping €5,499. In the latest edition of its “Power On” newsletter reported Mark Gurman of Bloomberg that Apple has “several new external monitors in development.” Among them is a new version of the Pro Display XDR, which with the new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon drive. However, Gurman thinks it is possible that the new Pro Display XDR will only come onto the market after the new Mac Pro:

Apple is also working on several new external monitors, including an update to the Pro Display XDR, which launched alongside the Intel Mac Pro in 2019. However, it's possible that the company's next high-end display won't launch until after the Mac Pro, as the computer is further along in development than the monitor.

A few months ago, it was reported that Apple was developing a new external display with a 7K resolution. The current Pro Display XDR has a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. A 7K external display from Apple could have a higher pixel density of 245 PPI on a 32-inch screen, or it could have the same 218 PPI as the Pro Display XDR, but on a larger 36-inch panel. Gurman also reports that each of these new external displays will feature Apple Silicon chips, so "the screens are less dependent on the resources of the connected computer." This should come as no surprise, though, as the Studio Display features an A13 Bionic chip and 64GB of storage. (Photo by Unsplash / Virul Weerasooriya)
