Foldable devices have long been a topic of discussion for manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei. There are now growing indications that Apple is also working on such a product. Industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo has released new details about Apple's plans – and also brings Amazon into the mix.

Foldable displays are no longer a niche product. The market is growing, and the technology is becoming more stable and powerful. While Huawei recently unveiled a large foldable device, Amazon is also working on a similar device in the background. But Apple, in particular, is said to be working on several foldable devices. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, these could go into production in the coming years. The competition between Apple and Amazon is taking on new dimensions.

Apple plans large foldable device

Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple is working on a large foldable device with two screens. When folded, it will measure around 13 inches, and when unfolded, up to 18.8 inches. This would make it larger than the current iPad Pro and also larger than many current MacBook models. It is still unclear whether the device will be an iPad, a MacBook, or a completely new class of device. The operating system will be crucial. If the device runs iPadOS, an iPad with a foldable screen is conceivable. However, if Apple uses macOS, it could be a foldable MacBook. The final decision does not seem to have been made yet. According to Kuo, Apple will not start mass-producing this large foldable device until late 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. That depends, however, on how well development goes.

Amazon is also working on a foldable

Interestingly, according to Kuo, Amazon is also working on a similar device. It hasn't been officially unveiled yet, but according to his information, the project is already in development. Amazon's foldable device is said to be similar to the device Huawei recently unveiled. Mass production at Amazon could begin in late 2026 or 2027, assuming no delays. This suggests that Apple and Amazon may enter this product segment at the same time. So far, Amazon has focused more on hardware devices such as Kindles, Fire tablets, and Echo speakers. A large foldable device would be a completely new segment for the company.

Additional project: Foldable iPhone from Apple

In addition to the larger device, Kuo says Apple is also working on a foldable iPhone. This project is apparently further along. The current schedule calls for the foldable iPhone to launch in late 2026. This would mean that Apple will launch the iPhone Fold earlier than the larger device. A foldable iPhone could be modeled after models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold.

Two new foldables planned by Apple – with a clear timeline

Apple is currently developing two foldable devices: an iPhone with a flexible display and a significantly larger device that will range in size from 13 to 18.8 inches. While the iPhone Fold is expected to launch in 2026, Apple plans to begin mass production of the larger foldable device in 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. At the same time, Amazon is also working on a foldable device that could likely be released in a similar timeframe. For users, this means there will be significantly more choice in the foldable device space in the coming years. Apple will likely play a key role here – especially if the design, software integration, and user experience are as mature as usual. If you're following developments, it's worth keeping an eye on the years 2026 to 2028. That's when the foldable market is likely to really take off – and Apple could be one of the key drivers.
