Apple is developing a new Studio Display – release by 2026?

Apple is apparently working on a new Studio Display that is set to hit the market by 2026. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company is currently testing a prototype codenamed "J427." This would be Apple's first upgrade to its monitor since the original Studio Display was introduced in 2022. What's particularly interesting is that the new model may feature mini-LED technology. This would mean better image quality and higher brightness.

Apple has taken different paths in monitor development in recent years. While the Pro Display XDR was introduced in 2019 as a high-end solution for professionals, the cheaper Studio Display with integrated speakers and a webcam was released in 2022. The Studio Display was aimed at users who needed a high-quality monitor for their Mac but did not want to pay the high price of the Pro Display XDR. Since then, however, Apple has not further developed the model. Now a successor seems to be in the works that will bring some improvements, while a second generation of the Pro Display XDR is apparently not planned.

What is known so far

Apple tests currently a new monitor with the code name "J427", which is to be launched as the successor to the current Studio Display. The design is said to be largely the same as the 2022 model, but there are indications of technological improvements. According to display expert Ross Young, the new Studio Display could be equipped with mini-LED technology. This technology is already used in the current MacBook Pros and iPad Pro and offers higher brightness, better contrast and improved energy efficiency.

Mini-LED as a technological improvement

If Apple does indeed use mini-LED, this would have several advantages. Mini-LEDs allow for finer control of the backlight, resulting in deeper black levels and higher contrast. This makes the display more suitable for HDR content and professional applications such as photo editing and video editing. So far, Apple has used conventional LCD technology with LED backlighting for the Studio Display. Switching to mini-LED could bring it closer to the Pro Display XDR - but probably at a lower price.

Focus on the Studio Display instead of the Pro Display XDR

While Apple continues to develop the Studio Display, the Pro Display XDR no longer seems to be a priority. This high-end display was introduced in 2019 and is aimed primarily at professional users with its 6K panel and special nano-texture glass. However, the Pro Display XDR lacks some features that the Studio Display already offers, such as an integrated webcam, speakers and a more flexible stand. According to Gurman, Apple currently has no plans for a second generation of the XDR display because it is not a high priority for the company.

Possible new iMac with larger display

In addition to the Studio Display, Apple could also be working on a new iMac with a larger screen. Currently, there is only the 24-inch model with the M3 chip, after the 27-inch iMac was discontinued. A larger model with the M5 chip could be reintroduced to the lineup in the future, possibly with similar display technology to the new Studio Display.

Apple gives the Studio Display a future – the Pro Display XDR falls by the wayside

Apple is apparently planning to revise the Studio Display and bring it to market by 2026. This could involve the use of mini-LED technology, which provides better brightness, higher contrast and optimized energy efficiency. While the Studio Display is getting an upgrade, the Pro Display XDR does not appear to be getting any further development. Instead, Apple is concentrating on new Mac models such as the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. It is currently unclear whether the new Studio Display will also bring other technical innovations.
