Apple is constantly working on further developing its products. This is no longer just about faster processors or better displays. The focus is increasingly on new features supported by AI. Now there are concrete indications that Apple is working on AirPods and Apple Watch models with integrated cameras. The market launch could take place as early as 2027.
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is currently developing new versions of the AirPods and Apple Watch, each of which will be equipped with a camera. For these products, Apple is developing two special chips codenamed "Nevis" and "Glennie." The chips are expected to lay the foundation for the camera functions and are expected to be ready by around 2027. If all goes according to plan, the devices could be released that same year.
Cameras in AirPods: New functions through infrared
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a key goal for the AirPods is the integration of infrared cameras. These cameras are primarily intended to improve the spatial sound experience, especially in conjunction with the Vision Pro headset and future Apple devices. Gesture control is also conceivable. The AirPods could use the cameras to detect hand movements and react accordingly. This type of control would be completely touch-free.

To implement these functions in the AirPods, Apple is working on a special chip internally called "Glennie." This chip will be responsible for processing camera data and enabling communication with the device's artificial intelligence.
Apple Watch with camera: Focus on visual intelligence
A camera integration is also planned for the Apple Watch. Bloomberg reports that the camera could be integrated directly into the screen area in a future model. For the Apple Watch Ultra, a placement near the Digital Crown is being considered. The Watch's camera is primarily intended to enable so-called Visual Intelligence functions. This means that the watch recognizes visual information from the environment and can provide the user with personalized tips or directions based on this. It's not about taking photos or making FaceTime calls, but about visually capturing the environment and using this data for AI-based functions (via Bloomberg).
Chip “Nevis” for the Apple Watch
A dedicated chip is being developed for the camera in the Apple Watch. The chip is internally called "Nevis" and is intended to provide the technical basis for visual data processing on the Watch. 2027 is also the target for completion and possible market launch.
No photo or video functions in the classic sense
The cameras on both the AirPods and the Apple Watch aren't planned to perform traditional photo or video functions. Apple is specifically using the cameras to support AI features. This means you won't be taking pictures with these devices; instead, you'll benefit from their ability to capture and process visual information—for example, for navigation, contextual information, or gesture recognition.

Cupertino is working on a new technology approach in which cameras in AirPods and Apple Watch are not intended for photos or videos, but rather to support AI functions.
