Now, its successor is in the starting blocks: the AirTag 2. According to current reports, the new model could be released this year. According to a recent report from 9to5Mac, the AirTag 2 is scheduled for release in September or later this year. This would coincide with the iPhone 17 event, where Apple traditionally unveils new hardware. The new model is expected to bring not only technical improvements but also some interesting details regarding battery life and tracking.
When will the AirTag 2 be released?
According to 9to5Mac, Apple plans to release the AirTag 2 in September or later this year. The report is based on sources considered reliable. However, this contradicts the assessment of Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), who wrote in his November 2024 newsletter "Power On" that Apple is aiming for the AirTag 2's market launch in mid-2025—more likely in July.
iOS 18.6 as a whistleblower
Further evidence of the imminent launch of the AirTag 2 comes from the current beta version of iOS 18.6. In its code, clues were discovered that the system is being prepared for use with the new AirTag. This suggests that Apple is already implementing the technical integration. As soon as the AirTag 2 is released, it should be directly compatible with iOS 18.6.
New battery warning levels – what’s behind them?
One important change concerns the battery. Currently, the "Find My" app only notifies you when the battery level is low. According to the code, the AirTag 2 will have two warning levels: low and very low battery. This could indicate a change in power management. 9to5Mac even speculates that Apple could introduce a rechargeable battery. This would be a first, as the current AirTag uses a replaceable coin cell (CR2032). Mark Gurman, on the other hand, clearly states that the next AirTag will "certainly not" have a rechargeable battery. So, it looks more likely that Apple will stick with the principle of the replaceable battery but refine the warning systems.
Tracking range to be tripled
A particularly exciting rumor: The AirTag 2 is said to offer up to three times the range of the first model. This would be a real improvement, especially for people who want to find their belongings even over longer distances. Whether this will be achieved through an improved ultra-wideband module or another wireless technology is not yet known.
Safety and design
There will also be an improvement in security. According to Gurman, the AirTag 2's built-in speaker will be harder to remove. This will make it more difficult to secretly tamper with the tracker or use it for unauthorized tracking. This is an important signal to critics who have previously criticized the AirTag for its potential for misuse. The basic design, however, is expected to remain largely unchanged. The new AirTag 2 will reportedly look similar to the current model. So, if you have accessories like tags or cases, you can likely continue to use them.
