Apple released the seventh beta of macOS 11 Big Sur this evening, teasing iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1 and macOS Big Sur 11.
After releasing the seventh preview of macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple has released the new beta version of Xcode 12.2 to developers - even though Xcode 12.1 has never been released yet. What's more interesting, however, is that the Xcode 12.2 release notes specifically mention compatibility with iOS 14.2 and other software updates that have not yet been officially announced. Xcode is the tool used by developers to create applications for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. A new version of Xcode is required to create applications for new versions of Apple's operating systems, as Apple released Xcode 12.0 with the iOS 14 SDK this week published has.
iOS 14.1 or iOS 14.2?
While skipping Xcode 12.1 causes confusion, Apple hints at iOS 14.2 and Co. Strictly speaking, Xcode 12.2 is already supposed to be compatible with iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1 and macOS Big Sur 11. The note states:
Xcode 12.2 beta includes SDKs for iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1, and macOS Big Sur 11. The Xcode 12.2 beta supports on-device debugging for iOS 9 and later, tvOS 9 and later, and watchOS 2 and later. The Xcode 12.2 beta requires a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS Big Sur 11 or later, or an Intel-based Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later.
