Rumors have already suggested it – now it is official. Apple has introduced the sixth generation of the iPad Pro series.
Apple has updated its iPad Pro series presented. The upgrade to the M2 chip brings WiFi 6E support but no mini-LED for the 11-inch model. The announced update to the iPad Pro range is primarily an improvement in internal specifications. The most important change in the premium tablets is the switch from the M1 chip to the M2. The processor, which is already used in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, was an expected addition to the iPad Pro models. In addition to the 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, the chip also brings the Media Engine, which speeds up video encoding and decoding. The models still have 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM, depending on the storage capacity. Storage capacity still starts at 128 GB and increases to 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB up to a maximum of 2 TB.
iPad Pro 6th generation: MiniLED is reserved for the larger model
One missing change is an update to the 11-inch iPad Pro display. While the 12.9-inch iPad Pro continues to use the Liquid Retina XDR display with miniLED backlighting, it has not been included in the smaller model. The screens have a resolution of 2,388 x 1,668 and 2,732 x 2,048 pixels respectively and support ProMotion, Wide Color (P3) and True Tone. The second-generation Apple Pencil 2 is still supported by both tablets, but Apple now boasts the ability to detect the pen tip up to 12mm from the display. On the back, the camera system consists of two sensors, a 12MP wide-angle and a 10MP ultra-wide-angle version.
There's 2x optical and 5x digital zoom, True Tone flash, and LiDAR for depth mapping. The TrueDepth camera on the front has a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and the usual depth mapping features, which it uses for Face ID, Animoji and Memoji, as well as portrait shots. The rear cameras can shoot 4K at 60fps, including video stabilization, and a 1080p slow-mo mode at 240fps. The TrueDepth camera can shoot 1080p video at 60fps with cinematic video stabilization.
Prices and availability
As for connectivity, Apple has upgraded WiFi and now supports WiFi 6E, which allows for more bandwidth on networks that support this standard. It has also been upgraded from Bluetooth 5.0 to Bluetooth 5.3. There is still the option to upgrade to a cellular model with 5G support in sub-6GHz and mmWave variants. While the iPhone 14 says goodbye to physical SIM cards, the iPad Pro will continue to use them for a while. Prices for the 11-inch iPad Pro start at €1,049 for the WiFi model and €1,249 for the WiFi + Cellular model, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at €1,499 and €1,649, respectively.
