The comparison between iPhone and Android users shows clear differences when it comes to the timing of upgrades. According to a study by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), iPhone users keep their devices longer than Android owners, who upgrade to newer technologies more frequently.
The data from the CIRPreport provide interesting insights into the behavior of iPhone and Android users with regard to the usage time of their devices. It turns out that iPhone owners tend to wait longer before upgrading to a new model, while Android users replace their phones more often.
iPhone users keep their devices longer
A growing number of iPhone users are choosing to keep their devices for longer periods of time. According to CIRP, about 33% of iPhone owners who bought a new phone last year had used their previous device for at least three years. In comparison, the share of Android users who kept their devices that long was only 21%. In 2023, 29% of iPhone users kept their devices for three or more years. This share increased slightly in 2024, while the share among Android users remained almost unchanged.
Apple's longevity and strategy
One reason for the longer lifespan of iPhones is the durability of the devices and Apple's focus on continuous improvement. In contrast to an annual cycle of revolutionary innovations, Apple has pursued a strategy of developing its product line sustainably, which means that the devices remain up-to-date and functional for longer. The financing options that Apple offers also play a role. With the option to spread payments over a longer period of time, many users are no longer under pressure to quickly upgrade to a new model.
Android users switch faster
Android users, on the other hand, tend to change their devices more frequently. CIRP data shows that 57% of Android phones that were retired were less than two years old. This is a marked difference from iPhone users, where only a third buy a new device within this time period. One of the main reasons for this is the wide range of Android devices available. With many manufacturers producing Android smartphones, there are a variety of new models and features that are attractive to Android users. In addition, Android phones are often cheaper than iPhones, allowing users to upgrade more often.
