WhatsApp, the popular instant messenger originally developed for smartphones, is finally expanding its reach. After already being available for computers in the form of a brand new macOS version, the app is now expanding to the iPad as well. This means that WhatsApp users will be able to access their messages and chats on any Apple device of their choice.

The latest beta version of WhatsApp, currently available on Apple's TestFlight platform, has been specifically designed to work on the iPad. This is a significant improvement, as iPad owners were previously forced to use the web version of WhatsApp or face the incompatibility of the iPhone version with iPadOS. 9to5Mac has confirmedthat the WhatsApp beta app now works smoothly on the iPad.

WhatsApp now with beta app for the iPad

It follows a similar concept to the Mac app. After installing and opening the app, you will be asked to open WhatsApp on your phone and scan a QR code. Once this step is completed, the app will automatically sync your conversations. This gives you the ability to send and receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac alike. A notable feature of the iPad version is its independence from your iPhone. This means that you can receive and send messages on your iPad even if your iPhone is not nearby or not connected to the same WiFi network. This new app takes advantage of the iPad's spacious screen to display content in neat columns. Back in 2021, there were early signs that WhatsApp was working on an iPad app. However, it should be noted that the iPad version, much like the desktop version, is a companion app.

Availability

This means that you cannot create a separate WhatsApp account with it. Nevertheless, this addition is a significant convenience for those who want to access the messages on their phone. Unfortunately, there is no clear information yet on when WhatsApp for iPad will be publicly available. The beta version is currently only available through TestFlight and spots are limited, making access difficult. The good news, however, is that it will hopefully not be long before the app is available on the App Store. For the Mac version, this process took almost a year, so it remains to be seen whether it will be faster this time. Looking for new accessories?
