In a world where digital freedom and security are becoming increasingly important, Apple is introducing an EU-enforced innovation with the latest version of its operating system, iOS 17.5. This article takes a detailed look at the Web Distribution Sideloading feature, which is now available in the EU with the release of iOS 17.5 Beta 2.

Since the advent of Apple's iOS on the market, the company has always placed emphasis on security and a seamless user experience. With the introduction of the new Web Distribution Sideloading feature in response to the Digital Markets Act in the EU, Apple is opening up new ways for developers to bring their apps directly to consumers.

What is Web Distribution?

Web Distribution enables enables developers in the European Union to offer their iOS apps for download directly on their own website. This option forms a third pillar alongside the traditional App Store and the upcoming alternative marketplaces.

How does it work?

To use web distribution, developers must agree to the App Store's new terms and conditions and pay a Core Technology Fee when they exceed certain download thresholds. This fee is €0.50 for each installation after the first million in a year.

iOS 17.5 Sideloading: Installation Process and Security Measures

The installation process begins with authentication via Face ID, followed by a multi-step process that includes both granting permission to the developer and installing the app itself. Apple emphasizes the importance of its notarization to ensure that all apps comply with guidelines and are communicated transparently.

Differences and advantages over Android

Compared to Android, which uses a one-time approval model for sideloading, iOS offers users more security and transparency through more detailed controls and comprehensive information about each app before installation.

Sideloading on the iPhone: iOS 17.5 introduces Web Distribution

The introduction of the Web Distribution Sideloading feature in iOS 17.5 marked a significant step in the evolution of Apple's operating system. By allowing developers to interact directly with users, Apple is opening up new avenues for diversity in the app ecosystem. This feature allows iOS users in the EU to download and install apps directly from developers' websites, protected by Apple's strict security system. Are you looking for new accessories?
