From Apple's Mac and iPhone to Windows and Android: digital devices require active virus protection. The number of criminal attacks on smartphones, computers, etc. is increasing, and not just in large companies. In addition to antivirus programs, there are numerous tools and tricks that help you stay safe on the Internet. We provide an overview of current security standards and the best tips from IT professionals.

Antivirus programs for computers – these test winners make PCs safe

Whether surfing the Internet, reading emails or working: there is usually a lot of data on your private or business computer that is not intended for third parties. Therefore, every PC today should have good virus protection. If it is a private computer, antivirus programs often fails. In addition, there are simple practices that you can use to ensure that your PC remains permanently safe and protected. To ensure safe surfing on the Internet, it is advisable to always download the latest version of your browser. Vulnerabilities are often exploited. It is even better to implement a free tool that directly shows unsafe websites and downloads. Updates to your own operating system should also not be ignored and should be downloaded regularly. If a virus infection does occur, programs such as the Malwarebyte Anti-Malware program can help. It detects and removes viruses in equal measure. Adware for the PC is less harmful. The unwanted advertising can be removed using the AdCleaner program, for example.

Data protection for your smartphone – 5 tips for more security

From privacy settings on Facebook, Google and WhatsApp to external apps and programs – we have summarized the most important tips for your smartphone.

1. Lock screen security

By locking the screen or setting a code, device encryption is improved and the smartphone's memory cannot be read. As a rule, devices with this type of security are then unattractive to criminals. A screen lock can easily be set up later under "Settings" and "Security".

2. Do not remove the SIM PIN

To prevent your smartphone from being used to make phone calls if it is lost, the PIN lock on the SIM card should not be removed.

3. Check app permissions

A lot of data is sent to app developers every day. With the security app “Bouncer” you can easily manage the permissions and revoke them from certain groups of people.

4. Install system updates

Important updates from manufacturers should always be installed. This will close any security gaps in older versions.

5. Check privacy settings on Facebook, Google and WhatsApp

IT experts recommend turning off the recording of the movement profile via the Google location service, otherwise all data will be forwarded. The privacy settings on Facebook should also be checked regularly, as the online community actively uses all data. On WhatsApp, all chats are end-to-end encrypted. However, the metadata is always visible. The only way to prevent this is to use a different number for WhatsApp than the main number and deny access to the contacts during setup. In addition, experts recommend that the internet connections of your own devices should always be via a private network (VPN) to encrypt.

Virus protection for your smartphone – the test winners of Stiftung Warentest

To keep Android devices safe, a virus scanner is recommended. According to Stiftung Warentest, "Sophos Intercept X for Mobile" is the best option. For iPhones and iPads, no program is necessary, as they are secure enough by default. (Photo by Chor Muang / Bigstockphoto)
