Eleven days after the season four finale, Jason Sudeikis has spoken about Ted Lasso's future. The lead actor and co-creator would like to continue. At the same time, he reveals a detail that is more important for the question of timing than any declaration of intent.
The fourth season of Ted Lasso concluded on October 7th with its tenth episode. Since then, the question has been whether the streaming service Apple TV will renew the series. Back in August, Services chief Eddy Cue stated that he saw enough storylines for a fifth season. Now, Sudeikis himself has weighed in, in an episode of the podcast Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, which aired on October 18th.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Jason Sudeikis would like to continue Ted Lasso beyond the fourth season.
- There is currently no writing team for a fifth season.
- Sudeikis assumes that Apple would continue, but no extension has been announced.
- The main actors are said to have already signed on for three more seasons in 2025.
What Sudeikis says in the podcast
Moderator Sam Fragoso pointed out that Sudeikis was being conspicuously reticent when asked about further seasons. His answer was brief:
I would like to, yes. I think that would be fun.
When asked about plans for a fifth and sixth season, Sudeikis pointed out that the show's return was driven by the idea that there was more potential in the story. Whether that happens depends on many people involved. When asked if Apple would continue, he simply said he assumed they would.
No author team yet
The most revealing detail is contained in a subordinate clause. Sudeikis admits that work on new episodes hasn't even started yet:
I just don't know. We haven't started a writers' room or anything like that yet.
Without a writing team, there are no scripts; without scripts, there's no start to filming. The fourth season illustrates just how long the road to broadcast can take: filming began in July 2025, but it didn't start until August 5, 2026 – a good year later.
Three seasons under contract
The situation isn't entirely clear, however. According to a report from July 2025, the main actors have each signed on for three seasons. This aligns with the three-season arc that Sudeikis had previously envisioned and would sustain the series up to a sixth season.
Apple has not confirmed any of this. Contracts with performers are an option, not a binding order.
Why patience is now becoming a long thing
Based on Cue's statements in August and Sudeikis's response now, I consider a fifth season likely – just not anytime soon. If the writing team isn't even together by October 2026, and there was already a good year between the start of filming and the airing of the fourth season, I don't expect new episodes before 2028.
If you're looking to bridge the gap while waiting, Apple TV offers a total of 44 episodes to rewatch across all four seasons. After this wait, would you return to Richmond with Ted, Rebecca, and Roy – or should the series have ended with the fourth season? Let us know in the comments if you'd pull out your AFC Richmond scarf again for season 5.
