Sony announced today that the company will shut down its PlayStation Vue service. A date has already been set.
After around four years, Sony plans to shut down PlayStation Vue on January 30, 2020. It was an attempt to conquer the pay-TV industry, but the company failed. The company wrote in a statement:
"Today we are announcing that we will be shutting down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the highly competitive pay-TV industry with expensive content and network offerings has changed more slowly than we expected. For this reason, we have decided to continue to focus on our core business of gaming."
The service debuted in 2015 and was considered Sony's problem child since its launch - the project was a loss-making venture. The press release continues:
"We are very proud of what PlayStation Vue has achieved. We had ambitious goals for how our service could change the way people watch TV and in doing so demonstrated PlayStation's ability to innovate in a brand new category within the pay-TV industry. We would like to thank all of our customers, some of whom have been with us since PlayStation Vue launched in 2015."
