Google today announced support for Passkeys, a simple and secure way to log into Google accounts. Passkeys are an industry standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, and this method is already supported by companies like PayPal, Best Buy, eBay, and others.
Passkeys are an alternative to traditional passwords and offer an easier and more secure way to log into apps and websites. Google has already announced passkeys in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft. Passkeys are more secure than passwords because they are resistant to online attacks such as phishing. Users can log in with a fingerprint, facial scan or screen lock PIN.

To create a master key, Google users log into their Google account and select the "Create passkey" option. Passkeys on iOS and Mac devices are synced with iCloud Keychain for security reasons and login is authenticated with Face ID or Touch ID. The transition to passkeys will take some time, so traditional passwords and two-step verification for Google accounts will continue to work.
