Doug Field was a senior executive at Apple in Mac hardware development until 2013, working with Bob Mansfield. He then moved to Tesla as chief engineer.
Field was production manager of the Model 3 until he was replaced by Elon Musk himself. He took over this role in April of this year. Shortly afterwards, Field took time off. It wasn't long before it was announced that he would be leaving Tesla. Now an Apple spokesperson has told the blog Daring Fireball Doug Fields' return has been confirmed. There was no comment on which department he will work in at Apple.
Two years ago, his old colleague Bob Mansfield took over the management of Project “Titanium“, Apple's car project. According to rumors, Field will now be deployed there. This step could open up a new perspective. Perhaps Apple is not only working on software for cars, perhaps the iGroup is developing iCars after all.
What is Project Titan?
Little is known about the project. The development and construction of entire cars was Apple's original goal. In the course of research, this is said to have changed and the focus was placed on software development for autonomous driving. This was then to be incorporated into models from other manufacturers. The project itself was first documented in 2015.
At that time, Apple hired several specialists from the automotive industry – the foundation for the rumors surrounding the iCar was laid.
