In a recently updated support document, Apple pointed out that the new MagSafe charger delivers lower charging power when used with the upcoming iPhone 12 mini than with the other iPhone 12 models.
According to Apple, the MagSafe charger can charge an iPhone 12 mini at a maximum of 12W. This power is achieved with a USB-C Power Delivery adapter that is at or above 9V/2.03A. The support document points However, the company points out that the power delivered to each iPhone 12 model at any given time depends on various factors, including temperature and system activity. The statement reads:
The MagSafe Charger is designed to quickly and safely wirelessly charge your iPhone 12. The system intelligently adapts to conditions to optimize iPhone 12 charging with up to 15W peak power for faster wireless charging. The actual power delivered to the iPhone depends on the power adapter's wattage and system conditions. For the iPhone 12 mini, the MagSafe Charger delivers up to 12W peak power.
For other iPhone 12 models, a peak power of 15W can be achieved with a USB-C Power Delivery adapter of at least 9V/2.22A or 9V/2.56A. Apple has now confirmed this.
MagSafe: Apple gives further tips
Contrary to what some testers have claimed, Apple's original power adapter is not necessary for this. The support document also points out that when connecting Lightning accessories, such as the EarPods, to any iPhone 12 model, the MagSafe charger is limited to 7.5W to meet legal standards. In addition, the company explains that the MagSafe charger must first be connected to a power source before an iPhone is placed on it. This is the only way to actually achieve the maximum charging power.
